A survey sponsored by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America found that U.S. doctors "overwhelmingly" believe strong patent protection for prescription drugs "is essential to the development of new drugs" and that doctors fear a weakening of drug patent laws would hurt research and innovation.
The survey of 400 physicians, conducted by Ayres, McHenry and Associates between March 27 and April 17, is being used to bolster PhRMA's resistance to proposed changes in the federal Hatch-Waxman Act, which generic makers and other critics say favors branded pharmaceutical makers by delaying generic drug entries to the market.
