NACDS names officers, executive committee members

Drug Store News,  May 20, 2002  by James Frederick

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Marking a precedent-setting line of succession, retail members of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores have elected Mary Sammons, president and chief operating officer of Rite Aid, as the association's new vice chairman. The April 29 election, held at the organization's Chain Members Annual Meeting and PAC Breakfast here, puts Sammons in line to become the first woman to chair NACDS next year.

NACDS members also named Kerr Drug chairman, president and chief executive officer Anthony Civello to succeed Sammons as treasurer, putting him in line for the chairman's spot two years from now. Lewis Drug president and chief executive officer Mark Griffin remains the organization's chairman for the 2002-2003 term, after succeeding Alan Levin of Happy Harry's in December.

Both Levin and Griffin agreed to serve extended terms following the early departures in 2000 of NACDS chairman Frank Newman, formerly of Eckerd, and in 2001 vice chairman Andy Giancamilli, formerly of Kmart.

NACDS members also elected three new directors to three-year terms on the board. They are Mark Parrish, president and chief executive officer of Medicine Shoppe International; Saleh Yassin, president of Farmacias El Amal in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Harold Somerset, president and chief executive officer of Longs Drug Stores.

In addition, members named three new members to the board's executive committee: David Bernauer, president and chief executive officer of Walgreen Co.; Anthony Cuti, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Duane Reade; and Wayne Harris, chairman and chief executive officer of Eckerd.

Seven board members were reelected to extended terms expiring in 2005. Besides Bernauer and Cuti, those re-elected were Gordon Barker, president and chief executive officer of Snyder's Drug Stores/Drug Emporium; Tim Martin, senior vice president of pharmacy for Wal-Mart Stores; Rite Aid chairman and chief executive officer Robert Miller; Hi-School Pharmacy president and chief executive officer Steven Oliva; and Gerald Zlotnik, executive vice president and vice president of purchasing for Medic Drug.
