Harvard researchers urge tougher new drug reviews

Drug Store News,  May 20, 2002

> Researchers at Harvard Medical School are urging the Food and Drug Administration to adopt more stringent standards in approving new drugs "when safe, effective therapies already exist," according to WebMD. The online medical source said a Harvard study in the May 1 Journal of the American Medical Association found new drugs "had a 1-in-5 chance of causing death or serious injury due to unforeseen side effects." Still, researchers acknowledged the potential benefits of new drugs for serious or life-threatening conditions such as AIDS or cancer.
