Sternheim succumbs to cancer

NEW YORK -- Howard Sternheim, president of Thriftway Drugs and a board member of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, died April 22 after a long fight with cancer. He was 70.

Sternheim opened his first store in 1958 and with his partners, Alex Perchuk and Hal Epstein, built Thriftway into a strong regional operation. The chain operates 13 stores in the New York market and reported sales of $66 million last year.

Surviving Sternheim are his wife, Sharon; son, Robert; and two daughters Patty Karnofsky and Debbie Corhan.

Memorial donations, in the name of Howard Sternheim, can be sent to Dean Stephen Gross at the Long Island University, Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy, for the Howard Sternheim Scholarship Fund. The address is 75 DeKalb Ave. at University Plaza, Brooklyn, N.Y., 11201.
