Violence and Conflict: Understanding the Issues and Consequences. - Review - book review

Adolescence,  Fall, 1998

SCHONBORN, Karl. Violence and Conflict: Understanding the Issues and Consequences. Dubuque, IA: Kendall/Hunt, 1998. 223pp. (p).

The primary focus of this book is domestic violence, Street gang violence, bloody encounters with cults and militias, and the riots and disorders that have plagued several American cities of late. The focus is not on rape, robbery, assault, and conventional murder, but rather on the less conventional kinds of violence, along with the conflicts that underlie them. Moreover, the book looks at so-called legitimate violence, such as the use of deadly force by the police. It tries to make sense of the factors that cause legitimate violence to sometimes turn illegitimate, as it does in cases of police brutality. The book features a systems-level approach. A study guide is available that contains student exercises, class projects, and field assignments. It also contains a list of resources, including an annotated list of videos suitable for classroom use.
