Puppies: behavior

Science World,  Feb 7, 2003

Puppies are adorable ... and good mentors? A high school teacher in Akron, Ohio, paired five Labrador retriever puppies and their father with her behavioral problem-prone students. Each week, a dog trainer showed students a new trick to teach and practice with their class-assigned puppy. The effect? Both pups' and students' behavior improved--timely homework is up and trips to the principal down. "I look forward to school now," says one student.

The doggy experiment teaches students self-control, explains Nancy Dapper of the Delta Society, a nonprofit organization that trains pets for animal-assisted therapy. One student would agree: "It makes me think what my mom had to put up with. You've got to be patient."
