The Christian right capitulates - Louisiana Family Forum against banning gay student groups - Brief Article
Advocate, The, April 25, 2000 by Anthony Colin
It could easily be fodder for Ripley's Believe It or Not!--"The far right says students should be allowed to form gay-straight alliances." But according to the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, the far-right Louisiana Family Forum has said just that.
In a brochure rifled "The Merit of Equal Access: A Primer for Christian School Board Members and Parents" (obtained by GLSEN), the LFF states that attempts to ban gay groups could put religious groups at risk. LFF also criticized Salt Lake City schools, where protests over a proposed gay student group on one campus resulted in a ban on all extracurricular clubs.
"In their zeal to protect high school campuses from a handful of homosexual activists, they have sacrificed the greater good of all their children," the report reads.
"This document falls short of embracing GSAs," said GLSEN. "But it's encouraging to know that some of these organizations acknowledge that equal access means equal access for all students."
