A wide range of hate - Williams brothers charged with hate crimes in Redding, California - Brief Article

Advocate, The,  April 25, 2000

Even by the nefarious standards of white supremacists, Benjamin Matthew Williams and James Tyler Williams stand out. The brothers, who are charged in the 1999 slaying of a gay coupled near Redding, Calif., were charged March 17 in the fire-bombings of three Sacramento-area synagogues and an abortion clinic.

"The object of the conspiracy was to destroy and close synagogues and reproductive health services facilities ... and harm Jews ... and other groups of persons whom the defendants regarded as inferior or undersirable," the indictment changes.

Already facing the death penalty if convicted of the murder of gay couple Winfield Mowder and Gary Matson, the brothers face up to 265 years behind bars for the arsons. Benjamin Matthew Williams, who has claimed sole responsibility fo the slaying and fires, has apparently found a mentor. since his arrest Williams has grown a mustache reminiscent of Hitler and expressed interest in wearing a Nazi-style uniform in court.
