Defective condoms recalled
FDA Consumer, Sept, 1987
Defective Condoms Recalled
Three U.S. condom manufacturers have recalled defective lots of their products, and 19 shipments of foreign-made condoms have been detained since FDA tests revealed leakage problems.
FDA stepped up condom testing and plant inspections because the products are being promoted as providing some protection against AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. In a letter sent to all U.S. condom manufacturers last spring, the agency urged the firms to inform consumers about how to use condoms for effective protection and stressed the need for top quality control procedures in manufacture of the products.
Industry standards require that no more than 4 condoms out of 1,000 leak. Test condoms are filled with 10 ounces of water and examined for leaks.
Schmid Laboratories of Little Falls, N.J., recalled its Sheik Fetherlite brand condoms, lubricated with a reservoir tip, lot number 04-06-87.
National Sanitary Labs of Lincolnwood, Ill., recalled Protex Contracept Plus latex condoms, with spermicidal lubricant and reservior, lot number 1661966S, expirations date 4-14-92; Protex Arouse condoms, ribbed and lubricated, reservoir tip, coral tint, retail code MFG 5 29 87; and Protex Sunrise condoms, lubricated and with a reservoir tip, Blue Erotica, Emerald Haze, and Golden Touch tints, retail codes MFG 4 28 87 and MFG 5 9 87.
Circle Rubber Corp. of Newark, N.J., recalled its Saxon brand, lubricated, ultra-thin, reservoir end rubber condoms, code number 7485 on the packages and number 487 on the individual cellophane wrappers. They were also packaged under the name L'Appel.
