PSA Journal,  Oct, 2004  by Diane Trout Harwood

With all of the abbreviations, acronyms, and jargon of the Society's business, I am still learning "what words" work for "what aspect." For me, it is quite tedious when members are so comfortable with the terms, using them liberally, and I am still catching on, trying to make sense of correspondence by post or e-mail.

Each new issue seems to confront me with a new set of them. To begin, there were organizational abbreviations such as officers, divisions, and chapters, as well as services and activities. Next come the various monthly and scheduled features of the Journal such as "On My Mind" or "Society and You." Included in this are Conference references and particular photography concepts that the casual photographer likely would not use. Then come the funds, products, and programs (at least from my background in education, I know A-V as audio-visual). Besides these, there is also the getting more familiar with general abbreviations that I had not been in the habit of using such as many states' two-letter abbreviations. Finally, understanding awards and honors are a difficulty with ROPA, CSA, and IUTP as examples. I am truly expanding my vocabulary.

Just as in any particular hobby or field of work, certain words work best for certain aspects; the Photographic Society of America (PSA), of course, is no different. Because the acronyms are many and varied, the policy of the Journal is that writers must spell out the words first, such as Photographic Society of America, followed by the letters in parentheses (PSA) immediately thereafter or should not use the acronym. Thankfully, I am catching on and already hear myself using some of the Society's lingo more comfortably.
