Call for progress medal award nominees
PSA Journal, Dec, 2006 by Tom Icklan
The Progress Medal Award Committee needs members' assistance in finding candidates for consideration of the Society's highest honor, the Progress Medal.
This yearly award goes to a person who has contributed in an outstanding way to the art and/or science of photography or an allied field. The candidate must be living and need not be a Society member or a photographer. In the past, inventors. chemists, engineers, lecturers, teachers as well as photographers have been honored. Although proficiency or achievement in photography can be considered, the Society also looks at accomplishments that provide devices, materials or techniques that advance photographic capability.
The 2006 medal was awarded to Steven Sasson for inventing the digital camera. In 2005 Dr. Larry J. Hornbeck was honored for his achievements in electronics including the DMD chip used in projection technology with David Muench selected in 2004 for his superior accomplishments as a landscape photographer. Other recent honorees included Thomas and John Knoll, "'Adobe Photoshop," plus Jack Kilby (Nobel Prize winner) for his work with integrated circuits. Please note the award can also go to co-recipients in the case of a team effort.
The members of the Progress Committee have a monumental task to search out deserving individuals and appreciate suggestions of members. Anyone aware of someone meeting the qualilications for this high honor should send his or her name with a brief outline of their contribution to: Tom Icklan, APSA, Chairman, 18 Donatello Dr., Manchester, New Jersey 08759 or e-mail to: TICKLAN@aol.com.
