Electronic Imaging
PSA Journal, March, 2005 by Betty Billingham
The Electronic Image Division (EID) will make available copies of CD catalogues of many exhibitions. The first is the EID section of the 2004 PSA International Exhibition. These CDs will be available in two ways and may be obtained from Rich Kolson, APSA, Director of EID Instructional Materials, 138 Glenhurst Drive, Verona, PA 15147-2720. The rental fee will be $10.00 for a three week period. Alternatively you can buy these CDs outright for $15. If there is enough demand, more CDs will be produced of earlier exhibitions.
Readers may remember how a CD was used by one club. The scheduled presenter was taken ill leaving the club with no education or entertainment program for the meeting. A CD became the program. First, there was an explanation of online competitions given by the chairman, and then members were shown the images that had been accepted. They were asked to take particular note of the differences between "Color" and "Creative" sections, and a lively discussion followed the showing, as a result of which several members have now started to experiment with new concepts. Experimenting has always been exciting, but even more so now with technology opening new doors and expanding the things photographers can achieve--the very pictures we have striven so hard over the years to get.
Tutorials
Excellent new tutorials are available for rental from the EID. The new tutorials provide more than eighteen hours of instruction. The EID Instructional Materials (EIDIM) service offers PSA members an opportunity to learn digital imaging techniques in their own homes and study at their own pace. Please see the complete list of tutorials at EIDIM: http://psa-eid.org/tutorials.shtml. A printable order form is available from the EID Publications page which is located at http://psa-eid.org/ publicat.html. The EIDIM service is available only to Photographic Society of America members and non-member readers are invited to learn about the benefits of PSA membership by going to the "Join PSA" page at http:l/psa-eid.org/ joinpsa.html.
Study Groups
Consider joining one of the EID Study Groups. Contact Barbara E. Miller, FPSA, at bembrit@ bellsouth.net. She will introduce a photojournalism Study Group. There is still room at this writing.
Tutorial Website
Recommended is Russell Brown's website. He is a noted Photoshop[TM] guru and has some new tutorials: http://www.russellbrown.com. He has a unique, humorous, and "wacky" way of presenting his tutorials. They are available as movies which can be copied and viewed as you perform the work in Photoshop. He has downloaded several for viewing. They look exciting both for Mac and PC users, but there is so much there that it will take a while to see it all. He gives tips on a variety of techniques, and readers will want to check this site.
Readers are invited to share a favorite site with tips by sending to the EID editor at the address at the top of the column.
