Stereo
PSA Journal, March, 2003 by Mary Ann Rhoda
The November, 2002 Stereogram newsletter (editor George Themelis) tells us about the new stereo screens being produced by the Da-Lite company. They are using a new material and they not only offer the 72x72 inches size, but sizes up to 96 inches wide.
Before you rush to order, read George's article, "3D Projection Screen Testing," in the December issue of the Stereogram. It is about a very thorough test of eight different screens from several companies at one of their club meetings.
George outlines the testing procedure, results and conclusions, showing the readings on the brightness and extinction for each screen. A good screen is a screen that shows high brightness and high extinction. Extinction refers to the ability of the screen to maintain polarization. A screen that maintains good polarization shows high extinction and, as a result, low "ghosting." If the extinction is low then "ghosting" becomes a problem; i.e., the left eye sees part of the right image and the right eye sees part of the left image.

Can You Recite the So-called "Rules of Composition?"
Every photographer can benefit from a review of these rules. It is important to learn the rules first, then you can "break" them to create those prizewinning pictures.
An interesting viewpoint on this subject can be found in the article "The Ten Commandments of Composition (and how to break them)" by Bob Krist on his website: www.bobkrist.com
Bob's article can also be found in the January, 2003 issue of The Stereo Window (editor Dennis Green). Contact Dennis Green, Detroit Stereographic Society, 550 E. Webster, Ferndale, MI 48220 to obtain a copy. More detailed articles on composition, including illustrations, can be found in the November, December 2002 and January, 2003 issues of the Stereogram. Contact George Themelis (addresses in the above article).
