CSD's permanent slide collection recent additions

PSA Journal,  March, 2003  by Wade W. Clutton

The Color Slide Division's Permanent Slide Collection celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2002. Over the years a variety of criteria have been used for extending slide donation invitations to exhibitors. Today, invitations are sent to all exhibitors who are awarded their 5th Star or 1st Diamond Galaxy in Color Slides. Reaching these competition landmarks is a long-term effort that only the most successful photographers achieve.

As active exhibitors, be it at the club, council and/or international level, we all want to know-the secret to success. Exhibitors fill out a "data sheet" for the slide they submit. The data includes information about the camera, lens, film, filters, flash, etc. A review of the data sheets suggests competition success is totally independent of these equipment variables. Successful exhibitors use virtually every brand of new and old equipment--very sophisticated, state-of-the art electronics, as well as simple manual cameras.

A review of the images submitted shows the subjects variety from "a cat in a boot" to lovely landscapes; the subjects include "still life--it's not going anywhere" subjects to rapid action images; portraits and people images cover the gamut from young to old. Surprisingly, there are very few digital images. The very creative images incorporate a variety of very conventional techniques such as filters and multiple exposures.

But alas there is a commonality among the images. The secret is: the makers, regardless of subject or technique, have used traditional photographic rules and principles very successfully. Good lighting, good composition, and interesting subjects/presentations are to be found consistently in the most recent collection of donations. Entering exhibitions and paying attention to your results, as well as the winners, will help you learn how to find and execute the basic principles consistently and successfully.
