Tours in Texas! Houston International Conference tours

PSA Journal,  March, 2003  by Carole Hagaman,  Icy Sowards

Welcome to Houston, Space City U.S.A., and home to people from around the world. The city is adorned with excitement and entertainment at every turn; the options are endless. We invite you to join our selected tours and bring lots of film for the following unique combination of city chic and Western savvy. Forget dry and dusty plains and think Texas Paradise, lush and densely verdant, great beaches, shrimp boats, cultural sites and an authentic Western experience. A great narrative of Texas' past is reflected through a mosaic of dreams built by legendary gold diggers, space cowboys, Mexican valor and flower studded oil fields. Houston is truly a cosmopolitian city, the largest in Texas and the 4th largest in the United States.

Monday Tours

On Monday, we'll begin our day early to cover as much as we can of Galveston Island's offerings of a wide variety of photogenic and top-notch attractions. There are enough fun activities and photo ops to keep even the pickiest of photographers occupied for days. The East End Historical District of the "Strand" offers sparkling gulf waters and Victorian elegance with a large array of shops and tantalizing restaurants from fast food to fine dining. The Strand is rich in history with amazing cast iron front buildings and impressive turn-of-the-century architecture to modern resorts and quaint shrimp boats.

Until late afternoon we'll discover the marvels of land, sea and sky at the fabulous pyramids of Moody Gardens. At the water's edge, you'll see three different color glass-encased environments to choose from, the clear is the Rainforest Pyramid, the blue is the Aquarium Pyramid and the mauve is the Discovery Pyramid. Stimulate your imagination and travel the oceans of the world at The Aquarium Pyramid. Step into the Rainforest Pyramid with thousands of tropical plants, exotic fish, birds and butterflies and explore the mysteries of science at the Discovery Pyramid.

Visit the oceans of the world at the new 12-story Aquarium Pyramid. With over 130,000 square feet of building space and 1.5 million gallons of water, the Aquarium at Moody Gardens is one of the largest aquariums in the world and features colorful marine life from oceans around the world. Come face-to-face with thousands of colorful fish, sharks, penguins and more in the "underwater classroom." Clear walls offer the vivid experience of observing underwater life from a diver's perspective.

Come and explore the extraordinary world of science at the Discovery Pyramid. In collaboration with NASA's Johnson Space Center, the Discovery Museum was opened within the Pyramid to help visitors fathom the realities of space exploration and learn about extraterrestrial sights. Spectacular traveling exhibits from around the country await your arrival. Satisfy your insatiable hunger for knowledge with live interactive demonstrations (40 of the 50 exhibits are interactive) of remarkable science experiments where the world of science surrounds you.

Step into the 10-story Rainforest Pyramid. This Texas size terrarium houses a full acre of rainforest, complete with thousands of tropical plants that flourish in a "seasonless" climate of 80 degrees and 75% humidity. You'll see exotic butterflies, birds and fish native to the rainforest of Africa, Asia and the Americas. Discover mysterious wonders of nature with crashing waterfalls, cliffs, caverns, birds and quiet streams, a Bat Cave and a special Butterfly Hatching Hut.

We can't meet in Texas without attending a rodeo. Dust off your cowboy hats and polish your boots because Monday evening, our group will be picked up from the Adam's Mark Hotel at 6:00 p.m. to head out to a historical working ranch for a Private Rodeo, Entertainment and Bar-B-Que Dinner. The event will include a Mini-Fandango--chuck wagon, campfire, hay bales, costumed characters, cowboy singer, roller roper with cowboy, cattle working, and a one-hour indoor rodeo show. This will be a fun & festive Western Extravaganza designed just for the PSA group--one that you don't want to miss.

Tuesday Tours

First stop is the colorful and interesting Kemah Boardwalk for fun and a variety of subjects to photograph. You can walk the boardwalk along the channel and watch or photograph the pleasure boats and shrimp boats as they arrive and depart. You can feed the fish and ducks in the water. Besides the numerous shops and restaurants along the waterfront there is a small amusement area complete with ferris wheel, carousel and other rides. A miniature train that you can ride goes in, out and around the restaurants and the plaza.

For the next four hours, fire up your imagination and get ready for an out-of-this-world experience at Houston's premiere space showcase, Space Center Houston. The space center features actual spacecraft, flight simulators, astronauts training for upcoming shuttle missions, simulated space walks and a guided open tram tour of NASA and mission control.

As the Official Visitors Center of Johnson Space Center, this exciting venue offers hands-on for aspiring astronauts and kids of all ages with a behind the scenes tram tour of NASA. It's a discovery center for all ages. Enjoy interactive exhibits, IMAX films, live demonstrations and tours of NASA's Johnson Space Center. Recently named Houston's #1 attraction, Space Center Houston is a spectacular journey into America's Space Program. No trip to Houston would be complete without a visit.
