PSA Journal, March, 2003 by Nancy Clark
Those of you who enjoy writing stories to accompany your photographs, technical manuscripts about photography-related subjects or product reviews often choose to submit your text to the Journal for possible publication. I very much appreciate your efforts, as I need a variety of topics and quality writing to choose from.
A lot of time and effort goes into developing these manuscripts; therefore, I can understand why I often hear from our contributors asking when their article is going to be published.
First of all, I should explain that an Author's Agreement form is automatically sent to each contributor along with a letter acknowledging receipt of their article. That does not mean that the PSA Journal has approved the article for publication. It only means that the article is in the review stage and we want to have a signed Author's Agreement on file if the article is approved and selected for publication.
I typically have anywhere from 50-70 articles in the "queue" at any given time. I begin the selection process each month from the articles that I've had the longest. Since I try to select a variety of subjects for each issue, I go by topic and date received.
Another consideration is the number of articles published by a particular author. If you have submitted three or four articles to the Journal, it could be over a year before all of them are published.
Even if you have only submitted one article, it can take up to six months and maybe longer for your article to be published. Occasionally, even though an article is approved in the review process, if we don't find a place for it in a timely manner and the subject is just not a good fit or it becomes outdated, the article will be returned to you.
Having said all of this, I hope that the long wait time will not discourage you or preclude you from contributing to the PSA Journal. This information should reassure you that the length of time in the Journal queue is typically not a reflection on the worthiness of your article.
