Thoughts on Ivins - Letters to the Editor

Progressive, The,  March, 2003

Molly Ivins has been an idol of mine for years, but I must comment on her column in the February issue ("Quel Cretin!").

I know that she is not endorsing The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, but to a casual reader of her column it would appear that she claims that the Israelis have been randomly "pounding the shit out of the Palestinians." Israel has acted only in retaliation to Palestinian suicide bombings of Israelis.

I'm coming off of my soapbox--just wanted to ask Ivins for a more balanced statement. And she's still my favorite columnist.

Thank God for Molly Ivins! Her February column was a welcome antidote to our President's whitewashed State of the Union speech. I had e-mailed a message to George W. the day before: "The Constitution indeed permits you to be Commander-in-Chief of the United States armed forces. It does NOT make you Commander-in-Chief of the world!"

Sometimes it seems hopeless, but then I think back forty years when I marched with Martin Luther King for peace and freedom. I also took part in the march on the Pentagon when soldiers and a fence surrounded it. Our efforts brought down President Johnson and ended the Vietnam conflict.

Molly, keep pushing us on and maybe peace will yet prevail.
