Be Kind Rewind

Interview,  Feb, 2008  by Mark Olsen

Review: BE KIND REWIND Directed by Michel Gondry (New Line)

A Michel Gondry film that slyly manages to keep its Gondry-ness in check until it emerges like a Cracker Jack surprise, Be Kind Rewind is nevertheless another toy-box diorama chock-full of visual invention and sweetly subversive romantic nostalgia. Mos Def and Jack Black play a pair of bumbling slackers who try to fill out a video store with homemade knock-off movies. The central conceit provides a springboard for riffs on movies from Ghostbusters to Rush Hour 2, championing an aesthetic of idiosyncratic, handmade regionalism in the face of generic, corporatized soullessness.
