Review: SUNSHINE (Fox Searchlight) Directed by Danny Boyle
Danny Boyle's greatest onscreen successes have been those that pulsed with frenzied forward motion (Trainspotting, 1996; 28 Days Later, 2003). Now, he grafts his propulsive pop sensibility to the futuristic outer-space saga Sunshine--and the result may be more emo than punk. This grandiose, warbling adventure set in 2057 follows an alarmingly attractive crew (including Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rose Byrne, and Michelle Yeoh) sent to reignite our dying sun with a nuclear payload. Gorgeously designed, if climactically overwrought, Sunshine nevertheless provides an exciting, welcome respite from the summer of the sequel.
