Princess Superstar: My Machine
Interview, Oct, 2005 by Anicee Gaddis
Concept albums are tricky territory, especially when the concept--the soulless, automaton-run near-future of 2080--is less than original. Princess Superstar, the prolific punk-hop glamster, should know better. With raunch, drama, and sauciness to spare, her persona is her gold card, not her overwrought cynicism about cultural armageddon.
My Machine, Superstar's fifth album, suffocates under the forced framework. Only when she breaks free from the mold, as on "Perfect" and the laugh-along "Quitting Smoking Song" does her star truly shine.
