Bob Dylan: No Direction Home: The Soundtrack—the Bootleg Series, Volume 7

Interview,  Oct, 2005  by Alan Light

For the casual Bob Dylan fan, the two-disc soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's documentary No Direction Home is a great overview, with live and alternate takes of many of his most loved songs of the '60s. But for the serious Dylanologist, this latest installment of the Bootleg Series offers nonstop revelations.

It chronicles his legendary transformation from traditional folkie to visionary rocker, opening with the first known recording of a Dylan original--a high school friend's tape of "When I Got Troubles" from 1959--and building to incendiary performances from the fabled 1966 Judas tour. Some of these tracks have never actually been bootlegged, others not so much as rumored. The speed of Dylan's evolution, shown here to glorious effect, only seems more astonishing with each passing year. Alan Light
