A History of Violence

Interview,  Sept, 2005  by Kent Jones

REVIEW: A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (New Line) Directed by David Cronenberg

Only nominally based on a graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, David Cronenberg's latest begins in rural Indiana, where family man Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) swiftly dispatches two thugs who hijack his diner, pulping them into Francis Bacon compositions in seconds flat. But Tom's good deed turns out to be his undoing, when his 15 minutes leads to the revelation of his real identity: Crazy Joey, who'd rip your eye out just for the fun of it. It's almost a comedy of errors--and a bruisingly funny, deeply disturbing one at that.
