Lovely & amazing

Interview,  July, 2002  by Nicole Vecchiarelli

(Lions Gate Films)

Directed by Nicole Holofcener

Jane Marks (Brenda Blethyn) and her three daughters (Catherine Keener, Emily Mortimer and 10-year-old Raven Goodwin) share a peculiar blend of insecurity, cynicism and humor. In her portrayal of this endearing, albeit somewhat unhinged family, writer-director Holofcener uses a similar approach to her debut, Walking and Talking (1996), in that she forgoes a traditional plotline in order to rely upon character-driven observations. The result is a shrewdly acted, subtle film that provides many keen and funny insights into the neuroses we inherit from our parents.
