Rickie Lee Jones. - Review - sound recording review

Interview,  Sept, 2000  by Hilton Als

It's Like This (Artemis)

Rickie Lee Jones is, arguably, the greatest song stylist of her generation. Her wise and wistful voice connotes longing and hope--the emotions of a practical-minded dreamer. On this, her tenth album, Jones reinterprets a number of songs that entered the cool lexicon (Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man"), or should have, long ago (The Mills Brothers' "Up A Lazy River"). Her duet with Joe Jackson, "One Hand, One Heart," is about as moving and theatrical an interpretation of Sondheim's lyrics and Bernstein's music as you'll ever hear. With a little encouragement, Jones could end up being a strong force in the American theater; she has a feel for narrative, and for puffing on a show.
