The Good the Bad And the Funky (Rykodisc)
While their former Talking Heads frontman spent his solo years restlessly trying a variety of musical styles, the Tom Tom Club have always been satisfied exploring one thing: the indomitable groove. Their first album in eight years makes it clear they're still in love with a basic head-bobbing state of meditative absorption. While you can easily hear the wry wit and grounded, physical funk that Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth contributed to the Talking Heads, too many guest vocalists make this album lack a center of gravity. While there are plenty of grooves, the lyrical ideas are stretched a little thin.
