Here They Come Again - U.S. women's soccer team - Brief Article
Interview, Sept, 2000 by Joanna Cagan
AT THIS MONTH'S OLYMPIC GAMES IT'S THE WOMEN WHO OWN THE FIELD
Remember when the Olympics were all about the guys, save for a pint-sized pixie or two? The World Cup--champion U.S. women's soccer team changed once and for all our expectations of women and sports, and at this month's Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia they're the hottest ticket going.
Sharpened by years of international play and some of the most media-ready moments in recent sports history (think Brandi Chastain joyfully ripping off her jersey after the team's win against China in the World Cup finals last July) Mia Hamm and the women's soccer team have taken on the kind of luster most can only dream of. Only time will tell if it's a reputation that will follow them into the future; but for now, there's nothing more exciting than the prospect of watching this group of talented young women flex their collective muscles. Stay tuned.
