What Planet Are You From? - Review - movie review

Interview,  March, 2000  by Elizabeth Richardson

Directed by Mike Nichols

Although Nichols's best work has arguably been in drama (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Silkwood), comedy is his preferred mode, and this comedy, co-written by and starring Garry Shandling, is consistently sharp-witted. The premise sounds cheesy--Shandling is an extraterrestrial sent to earth to impregnate a female human--but the execution is edgier than one might expect from the director who gave us The Birdcage. The entire ensemble (including Linda Florentino, Greg Kinnear, John Goodman) is solid, but the ping! performance comes from Annette Bening as a recovering alcoholic who sparks with Shandling. Even those who tend to resist Bening on-screen may find themselves succumbing here.
