After two stunningly beautiful albums that were almost too sad to listen to, Eels are back with something even more disturbing: a happy album. Front man E (a.k.a. Mark Everett) can write lyrics with the restrained precision and irony of Beck. But musically, he exhumes the past--drawing on references from Serge Gainsbourg to the Band--with reverent sincerity rather than the grave-robbing glee of today's sampladelic culture.
