Britney Spears in the Zone

Interview,  Dec, 2003  by Stephen Mooallem

(Jive)

Spears's fourth album is a self-conscious dissection of her sordid pop life. The opener, "Me Against the Music," a rumbling Eastern-influenced dance duet featuring Madonna, sets the tone for a mix of club cuts, airy sketches, and twinkling ballads. Spears effectively blurs the line between MTV guile and heartfelt sincerity, hinting that behind her own vision lies a rare talent for manipulating ours.
