In her convention speech, Teresa Heinz Kerry said that "one of the best faces America has ever projected is the face of a Peace Corps volunteer."

National Review,  August 23, 2004

* In her convention speech, Teresa Heinz Kerry said that "one of the best faces America has ever projected is the face of a Peace Corps volunteer." It "symbolizes this country: young, curious, brimming with idealism and hope--and a real, honest compassion." Hmmm. Now, not to disparage Peace Corps volunteers, but what about all of those young people in the military who risked their lives to liberate Afghanistan and Iraq? Listen to most of the Democratic party and you'd think those soldiers were forced into wars by a president who fought them because he wanted to.

Maybe, rather, it was the president who was forced into war, and the soldiers who answered the call of duty because they wanted to. In any case, for all the Democrats' bluster about strengthening the military, Teresa may have given us an important insight into the Kerry priorities: Idealism is building houses in Costa Rica, teaching English in former Soviet Georgia, promoting AIDS awareness in Mozambique--not defending this country from its enemies and using its military strength to save lives abroad. What was that about John Kerry having served in Vietnam?
