The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts - Brief Article
Art in America, March, 2002 by Stephanie Cash, David Ebony
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has chosen London-based American architect Rick Mather to design a $79-million expansion. The project calls for more than 100,000 square feet of additional space to be added to the museum's existing 380,000 square feet. The plan includes educational facilities, administration offices, a sculpture garden and parking deck, as well as extensive new galleries for display of the museum's permanent collection, featuring extensive holdings in French art assembled with the help of the late Paul Mellon, a long-standing patron of the museum.
This is the first U.S. commission for the architect, who recently completed renovation projects for the Dulwich Picture Gallery and the Wallace Collection in London.
