The 1997-98 New York Dance and Performance Awards, also known as the Bessies, went to choreographers Ronald K. Brown, Jane Comfort, Douglas Dunn, Mia Lawrence, David Neumann, Elizabeth Streb, and Doug Varone, and to performers Hope L. Boykin, Hope Clark, Lawrence Keigwin, Jaime Martinez, Pedro Ruiz, and Eddie Taketa.
The Bessies were founded in 1983 by Dance Theater Workshop director David White, who was one of the 1998 recipients of the New York State Governor's Arts Awards. Governor Pataki also honored Judith Jamison, Tania Leon, and Corning's 171 Cedar Arts Center in a ceremony at Lincoln Center on October 5.... Fame L.A. won the Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding choreography. ... Arnold Spohr has received a Governor General's Performing Arts Award, one of the highest honors Canada bestows upon artists.... The Dance Library of Israel honored Ann Reinking with its annual Document of Dance award on October 25.... Western Michigan University dance department has received a King/Chavez/Parks Scholar's Award, which made possible the fall residencies of Donald McKayle and Mary Hinkson.
