Frank Garcia - Transitions - director of the Alwin Nikolais/ Murray Louis archives - Obituary

Dance Magazine,  May, 2003  by Claire Gomberg

Frank Garcia, a distinguished costumer and director of the Alwin Nikolais/ Murray Louis archives, died from leukemia December 12, 2002. He was 71.

In 1960, he collaborated on the Alwin Nikolais work Totem; in 1961, he created costumes for Murray Louis's Calligraph for Martyrs. Thus began his forty-two-year collaboration with the choreographers. His costumes became integral parts of the works. Garcia also designed costumes for Hanya Holm, The Limon Dance Company, Rudolf Nureyev, the Royal Danish Ballet, and Batsheva Dance Company. His personal and professional warmth was reassuring to the many dancers he clothed over the years.

Garcia is survived by a niece and two grandsons.
