It's My Ovaries, Stupid! - book review

Natural Health,  May-June, 2003  by Susanne Althoff

BY ELIZABETH LEE VLIET, M.D.; SCRIBNER; $27

If you're a premenopausal woman with symptoms that include fatigue, weight gain, headaches, or memory problems and your doctor can't figure out why, this new book offers a possible explanation. The author, a physician, says you may be suffering from an ovarian hormone imbalance (a diagnosis, she writes, that eludes many doctors). Her comprehensive book starts with a self-test to determine if your ovarian hormones may be to blame. It goes on to offer treatment advice that includes forgoing foods with potentially dangerous additives like MSG and aspartame, avoiding herbs that can disrupt your hormones, and getting a better night's sleep. In some cases the book urges the use of birth control pills or natural hormone supplementation as a treatment. Vliet has created a sometimes technical but always readable account, using case studies to illustrate her points.
