In memoriam - Leland J. White, editor of Biblical Theology Bulletin - Brief Article - Obituary

Biblical Theology Bulletin,  Winter, 2001

The Editors of BIBLICAL THEOLOGY BULLETIN sorrowfully announce the death of our devoted and beloved fellow-editor, Leland J. White, S.T.L., J.D., Ph.D., who passed away in his home, in Charleston, South Carolina, on September 27, 2001.

Leland White's service to BTB was extensive since he became editor in 1982. A careful reader and critic, he sought to garner the best from submitted manuscripts, hone their message, and encourage appropriate revisions. His editorial essays regularly provoked keen thinking among BTB readers, who wrote to express appreciation for his insights. His provocative writings attracted an international following.

Priest, professor, lawyer, author, Leland White was ordained in Rome in 1965 for the Diocese of Charleston, earned the Ph.D. in Religion and Culture at Duke University, and completed doctoral studies in Law at Seton Hall University School of Law. He was a member of the New Jersey Bar and the South Carolina Bar. He served as chair in college religious studies departments in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Loudonville, New York, and was named tenured Professor at St. John's University in New York. He served as staff attorney with the State of New Jersey Law Revision Commission and was summer adjunct faculty member in the Philosophy Department at the College of Charleston since 1994. A research fellow at the Ecumenical Institute for Advanced Theological Research in Jerusalem, he also was recipient of National Endowment for the Humanities awards at Yale and Princeton Universities.

A prolific writer who published on a wide range of topics, he was author of six books, numerous monographs, and many articles. His list of publications can be viewed at http://www.cofc.edu/~whitel/

A special commemorative issue of BTB will be dedicated to his memory in 2002.
