Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, May, 2004
Drug labeling requirements and the FDA's and FTC's ever-present scrutiny of product label claims was the topic of the recent seminar sponsored by the American Association of Homeopathic Pharmacists (AAHP). The seminar held in Washington DC in early September, was timed to coincide with the annual east coast natural products trade show and various trade association meetings for the industry.
Representatives of 23 US and foreign manufacturers and distributors of homeopathic drugs attended the seminar presented by Alvin J. Lorman. Mr. Lorman is a partner in Foley & Lardner's Washington DC office and a member of the Regulatory Practice Group specializing in food and drug law, biotechnology and health, and is counsel for the AAHP.
The seminar covered all aspects of drug labeling regulations, including claims, ingredient listing, label format and required statements. Mark Philips, PharmD and COO of Standard Homeopathic Company, commented that "Mr. Lorman did a great job of sharing practical application of the FDA's labeling regulations to homeopathic drug products. The information on how the Primary Display Panel and Information Panel regulations apply and do not apply to homeopathic pharmaceuticals was very useful."
This seminar was the seventh in a series of educational events sponsored by the AAHP for both members and nonmembers. The AAHP, as the trade association representing the homeopathic drug industry, has established as part of its mission, to provide educational forums which increase the knowledge of manufacturers, distributors and pharmacists about all aspects of homeopathic quality, regulatory compliance, use and benefits. Al Lorman, at the seminar said that "Members of the association continue to make great strides in the quality of their product labeling. The sophistication of the questions asked during the seminar demonstrated the high level of understanding and interest."
