Layoffs and closings moved to the old economy, as Sears, Roebuck said it would close 89 stores and cut 2,400 jobs. Not far behind, Office Depot is closing 70 outlets and cutting 10 percent of its sales force. And at week's end, General Motors said it was cutting production at 11 plants; 32,000 workers will be affected.
