Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ancient Rome

Arts & Activities,  Jan, 2005  by Jerome J. Hausman

ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ANCIENT ROME (2004, $19.95) by Mike Corbishley. Getty Publications, 1200 Getty Center Drive, Suite 500, Los Angeles, CA 90049.

This is a reference book designed for students ages 9 and older. Its more than 200 entries include everyday life in Roman cities and countrysides, as well as farming, trade, leisure and games, religion, language and war. The book is beautifully illustrated, containing a wide range of images: ruins of temples, aqueducts, jewelry, armor, stone carvings, mosaics, sculptures, and architecture. To help the students find their way, there are a number of "traits" (trade and transports, everyday life, religion and ceremonies, engineering, language and writing, etc). Within each "trait" there are suggested entries that can be found in the encyclopedia. Students are encouraged to explore individual entries and then move to other connected areas in the text. Each "trait" suggests a journey and makes clear the many connection that can be found in exploring ideas about Ancient Rome.-J.J.H.
