Writing and Illustrating the Graphic Novel: Everything You Need to Know to Create Great Graphic Works

Arts & Activities,  March, 2005

WRITING AND ILLUSTRATING THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: Everything You Need to Know to Create Great Graphic Works (2004; $21.95) by Mike Chinn. Barron's Educational Series, Inc., 250 Wireless Blvd., Hauppauge, NY 11788.

We are all aware of the popularity of comic books among students and adults. What was once thought to be an insignificant art form has now gained more widespread recognition and respect. Only more recently has the term "graphic novel" been the subject of discussion and study. Yet, for art teachers, the idea of graphic novels has great potential. As this book's author, Mike Chinn, put it: "Grown-up comics? Perhaps. Taking the fast-reading emotional world of conventional novels, the familiar visual techniques of comics and tossing in a few ideas from the movies, graphic novels have created their own space and become something unique. A new voice for the 21st century."

As art teachers, we speak of the connections between words and images. Graphic novels and comics are presented within a framework that portrays a story. This book is beautifully illustrated. Its sections are organized as follows: defining the graphic novel; elements of the novel (panels, framing, captions); observation for inspiration (observing and recording); writing a script; and illustrating the script.

Perhaps the activities suggested in this book can start as a "club." But be assured, once begun, the momentum and enthusiasm will grow. This book will help!-J.J.H. For information about this publication, circle No. 397 on the Reader Service Card.
