Outstanding achievers honored with AORN awards: Saturday, March 10, and Sunday, March 11, 2007

AORN Journal,  June, 2007  by Christine Ferrill,  Liz Cowperthwaite

Individuals who have made outstanding contributions to AORN and the perioperative profession are recognized every year at Congress. This year's award winners were honored at the annual Awards Dinner and during the Congress Opening Session.

AWARDS DINNER

President Paula Graling, RN, MSN, CNOR, CNS, presided over a glittering celebration of perioperative nursing achievement at the Saturday evening Awards Dinner, which was sponsored by Tyco Healthcare. Winners included leaders in management, nursing education, mentorship, and Next Generation achievement; poster presenters; Writers Contest winners; and exemplary AORN staff members. Jane Rothrock, DNSc, RN, CNOR, FAAN, accepted AORN's pinnacle award, the Award for Excellence.

AORN chapter winners submitted videos, scrap books, and slide shows to demonstrate the work they have done during the past year to promote perioperative nursing. "I'm in awe of the many ways you have chosen to tell your stories," said President Graling.

COMMEMORATIVE COINS. Midway through the evening, President Graling presented the dinner attendees with commemorative coins bearing her Congress logo and theme. She explained that the coins were inspired by a military memorial coin given to her by General Douglas Carver, a US Army chaplain, who she met when traveling to South Korea. President Graling informed attendees that

   The coin represents affiliation, support,
or patronage to the organization and is
used to improve morale, foster unit
esprit de corps, and honor service members
   for their hard work.

PEERS AWARD

The Jerry G. Peers Award for Distinguished Service was presented during the Congress Opening Session on Sunday morning. Two individuals were honored with the Peers Award this year: Patricia Seifert, RN, MSN, CNOR, CRNFA, FAAN, and Dan Sandel, president of Sandel Medical Industries, LLC. More information on this year's Peers Award winners appears on page 1081-1082 of this Journal.
