AORN Journal, Nov, 2004
Each day we achieve accomplishments large and small that affect the people around us. AORN would like to celebrate these unsung accomplishments and everyday feats.
Janet F. Lococo, RN, CNOR(E), Lockport, La As a retired perioperative nurse, Janet still has a real passion for perioperative nursing that is reflected in her everyday activities, which include finding many opportunities to promote nursing to younger generations. Once, at a beauty salon, she talked to the daughter of a friend who wanted to get a degree in medical technology. The two had a lengthy conversation about nursing and all the career opportunities as well as the different nursing fields available today. The daughter seemed very interested in the conversation and, to make a long story short, will graduate with a BSN in December 2004. Janet's recruiting magic also worked with her own 16-year-old granddaughter who wanted a career in the armed services. As Janet told her, "If you want a career that will give you financial security no matter where you choose to live, why don't you consider a nursing career like Granny?" After a lengthy conversation about nursing education, the granddaughter replied, "So help me with my class schedule for the next three years so I will be prepared for nursing in college!"
