Clarification

AORN Journal,  Sept, 2007

> JULY 2007, VOL 86, No 1, PAGE 66. In the article "The new era of flash sterilization," the issue regarding performing periodic verification of enzyme-based, early-readout biological indicators needs to be clarified. In the 2002 version of ANSI/AAMI ST79 Comprehensive Guide to Steam Sterilization and Sterility Assurance in Health Care Facilities, the timing of periodic verification is specified: "[t]his periodic verification should be performed at least weekly, but preferably every day that the sterilizer is in use." Although the 2006 version of the guideline does not specify timing, it does recommend that periodic verification occur: "periodic verification of the early readout with spore growth should be performed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and facility policy and procedures." We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
