Certification board reviews CNOR job analysis

AORN Journal,  Sept, 2002

The Certification Board Perioperative Nursing (CBPN) Test Specifications Committee met in Denver in October 2001 to update the job analysis for certified perioperative nurses. The CBPN is charged by its accrediting agencies with evaluating the certification examination process every five years. The last job analysis study was performed in 1997. The results of job analysis studies are used as a guide to develop future CNOR examinations.

Working under the direction of a testing agency, CBPN conducted a comprehensive analysis of the perioperative role as it is practiced today and addressed the current and future needs of the profession. The committee focused on a number of important aspects of the perioperative profession to provide a role delineation study to generate

* domains of practice,

* phases,

* task statements, and

* knowledge and skills to describe the work activities of a CNOR.

Testing agency staff members prepared a draft version of the updated CNOR job analysis and sent it for review to the committee. The committee's comments were compiled and incorporated into the CNOR job analysis for use in the study validation phase of the project. A survey then was mailed to a pilot test group of five individuals who reviewed the survey, completed the questionnaire, and suggested changes to the draft. After the survey was finalized, it was mailed to a sample of 1,000 CNORs in January 2002.

Nearly 34% of those surveyed returned the completed questionnaire. The results indicate that all of the task statements and a majority of the knowledge and skill statements included on the survey achieved a high mean importance rating. Respondents expressed the opinion that the domains of practice and perioperative phases were important to competent practice as perioperative nurses.

This study identified the tasks, knowledge, and skills that are important to an entry-level perioperative nurse. For the purpose of the survey, an entry-level perioperative nurse is defined as an individual who possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to practice as a CNOR. This individual would have no more than two years of practice experience in perioperative nursing.
