"The President's Message" reports that the International Council of Nurses has adopted a definition of "nurse" for international use. It states, in part, that a nurse has completed a formally recognized program of study that provides a broad and sound foundation for practice and a foundation for developing specific competencies.

* "ORbits" discusses a study that found the mortality rates associated with intrauterine devices were approximately the same as those linked to use of traditional contraceptives (ie, condoms, diaphragms). * An article states that recovery room care for organ transplant recipients has become a sophisticated discipline. * A news item reports that more than 1,000 budgeted positions for nursing faculty will go unfilled this year.
