Dr David Sherer's Hospital Survival Guide: 100+ Ways to Make Your Hospital Stay Safe and Comfortable

AORN Journal,  Feb, 2005  by Latanya D. Davidson-Wilson

Dr David Sherer's Hospital Survival Guide: 100+ Ways to Make Your Hospital Stay Safe and Comfortable David Sherer and Maryann Karinch 2003, 309 pp $14.95 softcover

Although this book is written for patients, health care providers can use the many scenarios and questions it presents to gain insight into concerns their patients have. The selection of topics is excellent. The book advises readers on how to choose a hospital (eg, a specialty hospital versus a general or teaching hospital), provides a list of questions to ask the anesthesia care provider, and tells readers what items to bring to the hospital and what to leave at home.

The book is written to be used as a reference. The authors provide numerous web sites, addresses, telephone numbers, and other useful resources so a reader anticipating a hospital stay can do additional research on topics of interest. The book can be read from cover to cover for the superb suggestions, tools, and resources it provides or used as a reference. The authors do an outstanding job of introducing each chapter and telling readers what they can expect in the following pages.

David S. Sherer, MD, is an anesthesiologist who draws from many of his personal experiences to illustrate his points. His passion for patient safety is evident. This book will help health care professionals become more aware of what patients experience and how patients perceive the care they receive.

This book is available from Claren Books, 3000 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008; http://www.clarenbooks.com.
