30 years ago in the AORN Journal

AORN Journal,  August, 2004

An article encourages nurses to undertake research projects. The author says most research is conducted by people with a doctoral-level education, and only slightly more than 1,000 nurses in the world hold doctoral degrees. * In "Q&A," a reader complains that there is a double standard in her OR because surgeons with long hair are permitted to perform surgery without adequately covering their hair.

* An article on the hazards of radiation in the OR says personnel who remain in the OR during an exposure should wear film badges. Radiation striking the worker exposes the film, which then can be evaluated to determine the radiation dose to the wearer. * "ORbits" reports that deaths from emphysema have increased 145% in the past decade.
