Medical laser safety officer certification offered - Brief Article

AORN Journal,  Jan, 2004

The Board of Laser Safety (BLS) will begin offering a certified medical Laser safety officer (CMLSO) examination in March 2004 for individuals who use Lasers in medical settings, according to a Nov 17, 2003, news release from the BLS. The certification program is the first of its kind for medical laser safety officers.

The mission of the CMLSO program, which was formed in 2000 under the guidance of the Laser Institute of America and is administered by the BLS, is to provide opportunities for the education, assessment, and recognition of Laser safety professionals. To become a CMLSO, an individual must demonstrate that he or she meets educational prerequisites and has a certain Level of work experience. The individual also must pass an examination demonstrating knowledge in the area of medical laser safety.

The first CMLSO examination will be offered April 4, 2004, in Dallas following the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery annual meeting. After passing the examination, CMLSOs must obtain 10 certification maintenance points within three years to be recertified. For more information on the CMLSO program, call (800) 345-2737 or visit http://www.lasersafety.org.
