CHAPTER OF THE YEAR AWARD
For the 2000 Congress, members of the Membership, Legislative, and Research Committees and the National Committee on Education selected five categories for chapters to compete in for the Chapter of the Year Awards. These committee members solicited chapters to complete individual surveys, scored the individual surveys, and submitted the point scores to the Awards Committee. The points are collated and evaluated by members of the Awards Committee, who use the composite points to determine the overall award recipients. Chapter of the Year Awards recognize winners in each chapter size category (ie, small, medium, intermediate, large). Each category may have a gold, silver, and bronze winner. A chapter may be the recipient of the Chapter of the Year Award (ie, gold) in its size category only once every three years; however, chapters may be selected for the silver or bronze awards in consecutive years.
PRESIDENT'S AWARD
The President's Award for 2000 will be given for the most creative and effective activity that demonstrates how chapters and specialty assemblies reflect Partners in Care, 50 Years of Magic by promoting efforts to increase the ranks of perioperative nursing. Award packets for the President's Award were included in chapter president mailings in August and October. Deadline for submission to Headquarters was Jan 7, 2000.
MEMBERSHIP AWARDS
Four membership awards are presented each year. One chapter from each size category (ie, small, medium, intermediate, large) receives a commemorative token to recognize its outstanding activities. All chapters, regardless of size, are eligible for these awards. Selection criteria for winners are based on factors such as chapter management, membership marketing strategies, and chapter services. Winners are chosen by the Membership Committee.
Information is obtained by responses to a questionnaire regarding chapter activities and achievements from July 1 to June 30. Chapter presidents receive the questionnaires at the end of the fiscal year. The deadline for returning them to Headquarters is Oct 1 each year.
CHAPTER NEWSLETTER AWARDS
Four awards (one in each size category) are presented to recognize outstanding achievement in newsletter content and design. To be eligible for this award, chapter leaders must submit a newsletter that was printed between July 1 and June 30 before the deadline of Oct 1 each year. Winners are chosen by the Membership Committee.
CHAPTER RESEARCH AWARDS
The Chapter Research Awards are designed to recognize and congratulate chapters for their research activities during the past year. Survey information is solicited from each chapter, and the results are scored according to predetermined criteria. Chapter surveys are due back to the Nursing Research Committee by Oct 1 each year. The chapters scoring the highest number of points in each of the four chapter size categories receive a commemorative Chapter Research Award. The awards remain with the chapters as recognition of the chapters' nursing research activities.
AORN LEGISLATIVE AWARDS
The AORN Legislative Awards are presented to chapters in designated geographic areas that demonstrate dedicated involvement in supporting perioperative nursing in the legislative or regulatory arena. Selection of award winners is based on total points from surveys sent to chapter presidents in the spring. Surveys are due back to the Legislative Committee by Oct 1 each year, and Committee members tally the survey points to determine award winners.
Chapters that win an AORN Legislative Award are presented commemorative plaques in recognition of outstanding legislative involvement. Winning chapters also receive certificates of achievement that serve as tangible reminders of the importance of ongoing communication between AORN chapters and the legislative or regulatory arenas at the local, state, and federal levels.
AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN CONTINUING EDUCATION
The Continuing Education Approval Committee is sponsoring the AORN Chapter Continuing Education Award. The award recognizes chapters that have demonstrated their commitment to quality continuing education for perioperative nurses through creative, informative, relevant, and innovative activities approved by AORN. Approved activities presented between July 1, 1998, and June 30, 1999, are eligible. Selection criteria is based on chapters' descriptions of the impact of their activities. The committee selects winners from four categories based on chapter size. Award recipients will be recognized by press releases to newspapers of the winners' choice and will receive achievement certificates.
