Letters from our readers
Better Nutrition, July, 2004 by Andrea Rose, Marcia Miller, Lee Taylor Mercado
"The Future of Fish Oil" (May 2004, p. 22) neglects to mention that wild fish are an exploited, limited resource. The increased demand for fish contributes to the unnecessary killing of billions of fish caught by accident as well as sharks, birds, dolphins and turtles that are also caught and killed in the nets.
Marine algae and phytoplankton appear to be excellent contaminant-free, cruelty-free and environmentally responsible alternatives to fish oil. Until these new sources for omega-3s are widely available, flax and hemp seeds and oils have proven to be excellent choices.
Andrea Rose * Delray Beach, Florida
You raise a good point. The environmental impact of over-fishing is a cause for concern, which is why more and more researchers--like the ones in the story you mention--are attempting to find viable plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids. We'll keep following the story and provide updates as the research continues.
Thank you for the article "Gluten-Free" in the April 2004 issue (p. 50). People with celiac disease also need to be aware of gluten proteins in cosmetics, personal care products and drugs. Lipsticks, moisturizers shampoos and aspirin may also contain gluten.
Marcia Miller * Via email
Thank you for pointing that out. That's an aspect of celiac disease that our article didn't cover, and it's useful information for readers who can't tolerate gluten. We'll to cover of her aspects of celiac disease in a future issue.
I feel compelled to present with a difference of opinion from Bonnie McIntyre ("Sharing," May 2004, p. 12) with reference to your March 2004 cover featuring Jennifer Beals. From my perspective, Better Nutrition goes beyond nutrition alone to educate and encourage mental and physical fitness as well as natural beauty. I am a married professional woman who perceived Jennifer Beals as embodying all of that in the cover photograph. More importantly, Ms. Beats' story was indeed inspiring. Keep up the good work. I thoroughly enjoy your magazine.
