Heart health - updates - homocysteine associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease - Brief Article
Better Nutrition, July, 2002
High blood levels of a compound known as homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease--particularly among the elderly. Folic acid can lower homocysteine levels, but just how much is needed?
A Scottish research team at the University of Aberdeen concluded that an intake of 926 micrograms a day decreased the homocysteine-related risk by 95 percent in people between the ages of 65 and 75. Such an amount would be difficult to obtain from an ordinary diet, so supplementation may be required, says the report. (To avoid creating a comparative deficiency of vitamins B12 and B6, these supplements should always be taken in conjunction with folic acid supplements.) The study appears in the January 2002 issue of the Quarterly Journal of Medicine.
